Taliesin, Mustique

Brief:
To design and decorate the interior spaces of new 28,000 sq ft contemporary new build house on the island of Mustique in the Grenadines for its Welsh owners. To take into condition the site and position of the house, the climate and the architectural style of the house. To design, specify and procure furniture, finishes, lighting, artwork and fittings for house and arrange shipping and transport.

Due to the prominent position of the house overlooking three of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, it was with these stunning views in mind that provided the basis for the design of the overall scheme. Other major points to consider were the climate, the linear archecture of the building and salty but strong warm winds that are typical in Mustique.
The house has no windows and is open to the elements in all areas except the bedrooms which are air conditioned.
With all these aspects in mind it was essential that all soft furnishing were practical with replaceable washable covers as well as beautiful. Due to the climate which is very hot but with temperamental stormy weather at certain times of year it was essential all items made from metal components were specially made using stainless steel or nickel to avoid corrosion. Paintings and artwork were specially commissioned to be painted directly onto the walls. Many items were bespoke pieces designed larger than is usual to appear at one with the architectural style of the houe adding a generosity to the space.
As a homage to the Welsh owners, Welsh slate was installed to all interior rooms as a grand design statement adding a discreetly patriotic sense to the scheme. The colour scheme was a palette of muted tones of blues and creams and accents of bright red. All materials used were natural linens, tawny wood tones and natural stone combined with quirky pieces such as enormous hollowed palm pots and carved trees trunks.

The result:

A very special and unique holiday house overlooking the Caribbean Sea which on arrival instills a feeling of instant wellbeing and relaxation for its occupants. This was achieved despite the grand size of the house. There are many cosy areas in which to relax and be private and this complements the many larger areas overlooking the ocean or by the pool in which to be sociable. A beautiful and unique "statement" building.
