Safeceps™

Design Agency:
PDR
Client:
PRO Medical Innovations Ltd
Brief:
To design a device or system which will measure the forces exerted on a baby during instrumental delivery and warns the obstetrician of dangerous use. The device will aim to go further in producing a record of its use, protecting the doctor from possible litigation when medical complications arise.

Expanded Commercial Brief:
To see the commercial development of the Safeceps™ concept manifest with the appropriate legal, financial and obligatory requirements in order to create a ‘venture of value’. The commercial objective of this project was to create a sellable entity; a commercial package comprising of company structure, sound IPR, proven and documented prototype product(s), a substantiated medical case, a proven commercial case, marketing strategy, brand identity and clear route-to-market. The main objective was to produce a proof of concept, working prototype competent of either being sellable (as a product/IP licensing deal) or investment worthy showing clear route to market objectives and tangible milestones. This project was to prove that the technology worked and the product delivered as a commercial reality.

Solution:
The Safeceps™ are a modern-day plastic adaptation of the traditional obstetric forceps. The product encompasses a number of patented technologies which allow for the categorical measurement of traction and compressive force exhorted upon the fetal head during instrumental delivery. The Safeceps™ are used in conjunction with a monitoring software system (call the SafeGuard™) which visualises and records the measurement data in real-time. The software system is based upon existing technologies available on the market and can easily be adapted to an increased functionality and data acquisition to other products. The real-time feedback provides an unprecedented insight into to the forces and applied forces of instrumental delivery. The Safeceps™ presents a tangible confidence to the user of the product and reassurance to the family and mother of the child.

The Safeceps™ provide a system which changes a very subjective operation to a methodological, systematic and evidenced based procedure – guided by objective measures.

The hope of the Safeceps™ is that it will replace the traditional forceps procedure and give an advantaged alternative to caesarean-sections and the use of the ventouse. Patient safety is the paramount objective and insuring this is our greatest endeavour and goal.

The result:

Safeceps™ - A patented, life saving instrument set to revolutionise obstruct healthcare world wide. (Please see images below)
