Project Ideas:

Recordiau Lliwgar (Colourful Records) wanted a brand and template designed for their yearly double 10" vinyl release. To begin with the label needed a logo to reflect the name but to also work in 1 colour to match the ideas for the packaging.

The packaging itself needed to work as a series, with each release representing a different colour. The first Y Record Goch (the red record) and the second to be Y Record Las (the blue record). Recordiau Lliwgar wanted the design to have a familiar retro/vintage feel to it and the idea of recreating Penguin book series styles was introduced to the design process.

Project Execution:
The Recordiau Lliwgar final logo was based on the idea of a paper windmill. Usually displayed as a colourful object and representing the strong bold primary colours, the image itself was clear to what it was without having to include colour into the design. The design for the record sleeve was developed using 2 past styles of Penguin book series'. Firstly, the 1937 3 band layout and secondly, the 1969 Helvetica based Illustrated grid covers. Whilst the initial idea was to include a Welsh artists work on the front (within the middle band of the 3 band concept), the design shifted to showcase this artwork on the centre spread of the gatefold vinyl sleeve. The 2nd, 1969 cover version was established and worked as a 3 colour design with an iconic geometric shape within the bottom colour panel. This put in place the groundwork and the scope for repeat design to compliment and expand the series. The music itself was pressed onto colour vinyl and used the 3 colours within the design for the labels. The labels also featured a large version of the logo, which worked well using the circular sticker.

All materials were printed in Welsh.

The target audience for the release is Welsh music enthusiasts and fans, as well as vinyl music collectors.

Project Effectiveness:

The release of the first record (Y Record Goch) was extremely well received and comments on the design were abundant. The beauty of owning vinyl is not only in the quality of the sound, but to have something tangible to hold and treasure, and the design certainly contributed hugely to this. It has also resulted in securing large Welsh language client design work after seeing the finished result.

Meic Parry, of Recordiau Lliwgar said: "The design created by Rich at Ctrl Alt Design was perfect. The packaging sits well on it's own and as a series. It will become a must have for record collectors and Welsh music lovers."

Record Collector and producer Dyl Mei Descibed it as "the best Welsh album cover ever!"
