Writers Plaques

Brief

The brief was to produce a standalone bilingual website that would display the location of commemorative plaques, memorials, and wall plates for some of the most notable writers of Wales. The site needed to be simple in design and easy to navigate yet provide a wide range of informative content for each writer. By mapping them in one place, Literature Wales aims to make the wider public aware of these plaques and to remind communities and residents of the literary heritage in their area.

Result

The end result is a site that combines great content and dynamic functionality. As a standalone site Literature Wales are able to provide a valuable reference resource for those researching Welsh writers and guide for those interested in visiting the plaque locations. In total more than 50 plaques have been individually profiled and the website offers users detailed information on each writer's life, plus extracts from The New Companion to the Literature of Wales, photographs, area maps and links to obituaries, articles, YouTube videos and further websites of interest.

Solution

Creo developed the site with the idea of combining client generated content with 3rd party and end user information. The details of each writer can be added together with the plaque location using Google Map API. In addition relevant feeds to Wikipedia, Flickr, Streetview, and external websites can be added to provide supplementary information. Further elements of functionality include the facility for users to submit locations of previously unknown plaque locations to the site administrators, so they may be added to the database.
