My graduate menswear collection 'Hiraeth Dros y Môr', which was recently showcased at Graduate Fashion Week, is an exploration of wanting to be at home in Wales during my studies in England. To communicate this feeling of longing, my collaborator, Lauren Crow, illustrated a variety of prints for my collection and diffusion line of tshirts and bags.
Despite being from the capital, I spend a lot of time in more rural areas, where many of my extended family live, exploring the variety of landscapes Wales has to offer. The notion of exploring nature and an appreciation of traditional craft is played out in my collection with the use of cross stitch detailing, felting, preparation and the use of fur, plaiting, and the use of natural materials, including wood and stone. Focusing on these rural ideals, which is further hinted at with the customised wellington boots, my collection utilises all natural fabrics sourced and created in Wales.
Wales has a vast amount of skilled companies and individuals, including handweavers, small mills, wool suppliers and farmers, that I felt should be supported and showcased. I have promoted both my work and of the craftspeople of Wales on BBC Radio, S4C and many upcoming magazine articles. Being able to explore the qualities of their cloths has informed my design work in a variety of ways. From cut to construction, I allowed the fabrics to work for themselves and created garments that complemented the weave of the cloths. The majority of the fabrics have been left in their original colours and then further embellished or top stitched in order to emphasize their original textural qualities.
In a move away from excessive consumerism, my ethos is to create collectable garments that you will want to cherish for years to come. Garments which will meld organically into your existing wardrobe and lifestyle.
