New Product Range

Brief

Following on from FBA’s design and brand development work for seafood producer Selwyn’s Seafood (including packaging) FBA was re-commissioned by Selwyn’s to create packaging design concepts for a new range of crispy seaweed seafood snack. The brief was to design packaging for their new seafood snack primarily for the UK market but also with an eye to enter the international market in the future.

Result

With new design and packaging Selwyn’s entered the UK snack market supplying a great tasting, alternative, fashionable product at a competitive price. At present two flavours are available, original Flavour and Hot n Spicy, but following a successful launch, which also saw the produce represent Wales in the International Food Festival at London Olympia in 2011, dozens of new flavours and ideas for this product are in the pipeline. Having been inspired by the Japanese use of Nori Seaweed during product development, Selwyn’s Crispy Seaweed Snack is looking to expand into the Japanese and South East Asia market.

Solution

Creating a design with a high visual shelf impact was FBA’s primary goal. By using organic imagery the design has echoes of an oceanic and organic theme while the use of strong earthy colours of oranges and greens steers away from the stereotype of using oceanic blue colour tones. The use of organic imagery also playfully espouses the health values associated with natural products such as Selwyn’s Crispy Seafood Snack. The use of rough, hand created style typography emphasises the home-made, environment-conscious that the product is produced in while also emphasising the dietary benefits of the product, being fat free and only 10 calories a pack. We also created an overall fun element of design to the product to overcome possible preconceptions by potential customers surrounding the produce i.e. healthy can be fun too.
