Richard Parks' 737 Challenge

Brief

Former Welsh rugby player Richard Parks aimed to climb the world’s 7 highest summits, venturing to the South Pole & the geographic North Pole; in just 7 months 7 summits, 3 poles, in 7 months – a World First. Richard devised the challenge 2 years ago, inspired from a line read at his Grandmother's funeral – "The horizon is only the limit of our sight". The 737 Challenge was born. Richard set out in December 2010 with the aim of raising £1m for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Result

The site allows visitors to track progress, read his daily diary, view latest images & videos as they are sent back. It receives an average of 28k hits p/m, with over 139k people in 83 countries having viewed the site which is promoted heavily through Facebook and Twitter, at one point trending in UK. The Challenge is being followed by the media and his Everest summit featured prominently the news. The BBC will air a special documentary.

Solution

We worked with Richard from the outset, tasked with creating a brand that could encourage sponsorship and captivate an audience. The Mark features 7 'hidden' peaks in the Challenge type and a graphic horizon marries with rough graphic features, panoramic imagery amplifying the isolated, hostile environments & the enormity of the adventure keeping the brand ever changing with each Leg. We applied the brand through ads, livery, print, event graphics, merchandise, kit, video & the web.
