The Best of Welsh Design Awards celebrate the wealth of talented designers and design-thinkers in the city and across Wales and help ensure that their skills and passion are recognised. Judged by a panel of international design experts, projects from any design discipline are recognised, raising their profile during the Festival and beyond. The emphasis for the awards is on results - not just what looks great but on what impact has been made.
Entries must be innovative and original so the Awards are a great opportunity to shout about your best work of the year. Entries are welcomed from all design disciplines.
Winners in the past have been a floating office, an interior scheme for a ski chalet, an environmental animation, a ‘cradle to cradle’ office chair, beer bottle branding and a half marathon website. In 2010 the category winners included Ethos Creative’s graphics for the Bafta Cymru 2010 awards and branding, Staziker Jones for the Licence to Inspire book for Pirum Publishing/The Central Illustration Agency, Hyde + Hyde Architects of Swansea and Cardiff for Pennard House, Bluegg of Newport for Sub Zero ice cream and Roughcollie of Cardiff for the motion graphics for Y Porthmon for Telesgop / S4C.
Shortlisted submissions (about 40 in 2010) are announced on the website and are on view the Festival launch at the Senedd forming the Best of Welsh Design touring exhibition. Last year’s showcase was exhibited at the Senedd, at the Wales Millennium Centre, in the Morgan Arcade in Cardiff city centre, in the Pierhead Building in Cardiff Bay, at Chapter Arts Centre, in UWIC’s School of Management, at the Coal Exchange, Cardiff and is currently at Cardiff Airport.
Work chosen for the showcase is deemed to be of noteworthy national standard, suitable to represent the talent of the Welsh Design community anywhere in the world. The Showcase has previously been in the Dutch Design Week and Istanbul Design Week.
The winners of the Cardiff Design Festival Best of Welsh Design Awards will be announced at the Festival Launch on Friday 30th September at the Senedd, Cardiff.
As the Festival is all about celebrating and promoting Welsh design we give the Showcase and the winners publicity through our PR campaign with previous winners having been highlighted in, for example, Design Week and the Western Mail.
Student entries are displayed on the website. They are shortlisted and judged by a panel made up of the professional community and awards are made at the Festival Awards evening
The public voting is now open! Join in and cast your vote on all professional submissions to 'The Best of Welsh Design 2011'. Clicking on the stars directly on a submission's page will allow you to promote your favourites on the 2011 chart. Votes are recalculated every 30 minutes and may not be visible immediately.
