Seashore Safaris book

Brief

Design a new approach to an old subject: having fun looking at rockpools and along the seashore. Written and photographed by Judith Oakley the book is a guide to marine life that can be found on the beaches of Britain. The book should have a real 'wow' factor that makes national media want to review it and potential customers buy it. The book should also be designed as more than a simple identification guide in order to be the more appealing option in comparison to competitors’ books.

Result

The book has received excellent reviews from a range of media sources, ‘the best activity book of the year’ BBC Wildlife Extra. The title fulfils its purpose as an exciting educational tool, with Cardiff Life describing it as ‘an invaluable guide to identifying intriguing marine creatures’.

Solution

It is designed in a smaller format to fit the brief of being portable and easy to pack for trips to the beach. The images take precedent, the text placed in panels in order to preserve the integrity of the photos and to tie in with them. It's easy to navigate and uncluttered. Images have been used for page backgrounds and featured within the copy, providing a closer perspective of the subject. Printing on coated paper makes the image colour vivid and eye-catching and adds a durable finish.
