Cardiff University Institute of Energy corporate identity and communication materials

Brief

Cardiff University’s School of Engineering commissioned a promotional brochure for the new Institute of Energy. We recommended production of a range of communication materials to provide the team with a more comprehensive marketing toolkit. A logo and identity was created to present the Institute as a professional enterprise, with a fresh industry-focussed interpretation of the Cardiff University brand. Project outcomes: logo, brochure, launch event posters, PowerPoint slide design, image bank.

Result

The style has influenced the School’s communication materials inspiring 3 new brochures, illustrating that targeted communications maximise budgets and results. “It is difficult for us to convey our capabilities, this brochure is the best example I’ve seen, enabling better communications with Welsh Assembly Government where it received a very positive response. Fran did a great job of ‘herding the wild cats’ that is academia, creating a world-class brochure.” Phil Bowen, Deputy Director.

Solution

A consultation process resulted in the content and scope being identified by the University team - vital, as the academics are the brand managers. The logo compliments the University brand and an E mark allows personal interpretation eg. electricity pylon, plug or engine part. The brochure is image-led with copy written at 3 levels to engage the diverse target audiences of funders, industry and academia. Photos and design in a fresh aspirational style convey innovation and industry expertise.
